Matthew Riehl, MD

Research Associate

Matthew first came to Park Avenue LASEK after completing his undergraduate degree, in order to gain experience in a surgical field to bolster his application to medical school. Originally hired for administrative work, it quickly became clear Matt had a proclivity for science and patient care, so Dr. Chynn decided to train him clinically so he could expand his duties to include basic ophthalmic technician duties. This did help Matt gain entrance to medical school, from which he just graduated.  Interestingly, Dr. Riehl decided he wants to make ophthalmology his life’s calling. Perhaps it was his own experience as a lifelong high-myope who underwent a long, painful recovery after PRK.  Or maybe the joy he saw in countless patients as Dr. Chynn liberated them from glasses with the more advanced, painless LASEK. Dr. Riehl already completed two ophthalmology clinical rotations, and is now trained to assist Dr. Chynn during the LASEK procedure.  He is also working on publishing research with Dr. Chynn and the premed interns to educate the public and scientific community on how LASEK can safely and successfully treat patients with conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), who cannot be treated with LASIK.  Hopefully, in another 4 years Dr. Riehl can return to become Dr. Chynn’s partner !
